vintage river shelling hooks used on the Tennessee,Illinois and Mississippi Rivers.
These hooks were used to catch river mussels. The hooks were tied to a long bar which was lowered from a johnboat and dragged over mussel beds on the river bottom. Mussels would clamp down on the barbs, and the mussels were collected from the bar when it was raised.
The shells of the mussels were used in the manufacture of ‘pearl’ (mother of pearl) buttons before plastic buttons replaced them. Freshwater pearls were also recovered and the mussel shells were used as seeds for cultured pearl production. The mussel hooks measure 5 1/8 inches long.
